Wall sconces

Wall sconces put light at eye level without using a single square centimetre of floor or table. Ours are mostly iron and other metals, often in brass or gold finishes, with glass shades for a crisp light and linen shades for a softer one. Black, gold and white are the most common colours. Most are 13 to 46 cm (5–18 in) wide and project 10 to 31 cm (4–12 in) from the wall, so modern wall sconces and wall lamps suit hallways, bedsides and the wall around a mirror.

Buying notes

Start with the mounting height, because it decides how the light feels. In living rooms and hallways, place the sconce so the light source sits about 152 to 168 cm (60–66 in) from the floor, just above eye level for most people. Beside a mirror, mount a pair at about face height and 90 to 100 cm (35–39 in) apart, so light falls evenly on both sides of your face. Beside a bed, set the sconce high enough that you will not bump it when you sit up to read.

Then check how the sconce is powered. A hardwired sconce connects to a junction box in the wall and needs a licensed electrician, so plan the installation, and the box position, before you order. Check each listing for how the light is powered, which bulb it takes and the maximum wattage, so you get the brightness and colour of light you want. For a bathroom, confirm a damp rating in the listing, or ask us, before you buy.

Finally, match the size and finish to the wall. A slim sconce with a shallow projection keeps a narrow hallway clear, while a wider shade suits a large living room wall or flanks a fireplace. Glass shades give a brighter, clearer light and suit bathrooms and kitchens once rated; linen shades soften the light for bedrooms and reading corners. Brass and gold finishes pair well with warm wood and other brass hardware, and black works as a neutral beside almost any mirror or frame.
