Table lamps

Table lamps put light where you actually sit: beside the sofa, on a console or on the nightstand. Our bases come in brass, iron, ceramic, marble, glass and travertine, and linen is the most common shade, with drum shades a large group of their own. Start with the light you need. A linen or fabric shade spreads a soft, diffused glow that suits a living room in the evening, while an opaque shade throws the light down onto a book or a desk. Drum shades give a clean, modern outline; the base sets the tone, whether warm brass, cool marble, textured travertine or a glazed ceramic. Before you buy, check the listing for the bulb type and the maximum wattage, so the lamp takes the brightness and colour of light you want.

Height matters more than it looks. Beside a sofa, the bottom of the shade should sit close to eye level when you are seated, about 97 to 107 cm (38–42 in) from the floor, so the bulb stays hidden and the light falls on your lap; on a 56 cm side table, that puts the bottom of the shade 41 to 51 cm above the table top, and a taller table needs a shorter lamp. At the bedside, aim for the bottom of the shade at about chin height when you sit up in bed, and choose a lamp no wider than the nightstand.

Most of our lamps are 31 to 50 cm (12–20 in) wide at the shade and 23 to 50 cm (9–20 in) deep, so compare those figures with the table top and leave room for a book, a phone or a cup. A matching pair on a console, or on either side of a bed or sofa, makes a room feel settled and symmetrical. When you mix different lamps in one room, keep the bottoms of the shades at roughly the same height so the light falls evenly.
