Dining chairs get used every day, so comfort and fit matter as much as looks. Ours pair wood or metal frames with upholstered fabric, leather or faux leather seats, and some add cane backs or bouclé. You will find side chairs that tuck under the table and arm chairs for the ends or for longer dinners, from upholstered dining chairs to simple wood dining chairs that also work as kitchen chairs. Cream, brown and black lead the colours, and most chairs stand 75 to 89 cm (30–35 in) tall.

Fit starts with the gap between the seat and the table. A typical dining seat sits 45 to 50 cm (18–20 in) from the floor; leave 25 to 30 cm (10–12 in) between the seat and the underside of the table top so knees and thighs clear the apron. If you choose arm chairs, check the arm height against the apron as well, or the chair will not slide under the table when it is not in use. Most of our chairs are 47 to 62 cm (19–24 in) wide, so compare the listed width with your table.

Next, count the places. Allow about 60 cm (24 in) of table length for each chair so neighbours are not bumping elbows, which means a 180 cm table seats three along each side. Arm chairs take a little more room, so many people use them only at the ends. Leave about 90 cm (36 in) between the table edge and the wall or the next piece of furniture, so people can pull a chair out, sit down and get up without squeezing past.

Choose the materials for how you eat. Wood and leather wipe clean with a damp cloth, which makes them the easy choice for daily family meals and kitchen tables. Faux leather cleans just as easily. Upholstered fabric and bouclé feel softer and quieter, but light fabrics show spills sooner, so they suit an adult dining room better than a busy kitchen. Cane backs add texture and let light through, which keeps six chairs from looking heavy around a small table.
