Candle holders

Candle holders bring a warm point of light to a dining table, a mantel or an entry console. Ours include candlesticks for tapers, pillar candle holders, tealight holders and hurricane candle holders with a glass shade. Most are metal, with black the leading colour, then gold and a little brass, and there are glass, wood and a few marble pieces too. Half stand 28 cm (11 in) tall or less, and some are sold as sets, which makes a grouping of different heights easy to build.

Buying notes

Start with the candle you actually burn. Taper holders take standard taper candles and hold them upright in a snug cup. Pillar holders need a flat plate a little wider than the candle so dripping wax stays on the plate, not the table. Tealight holders suit small, short-lived light on a coffee table or a shelf. Hurricanes surround the flame with a glass shade that shields it from drafts, which makes them the right choice near a window, a doorway or on a covered porch table.

Then think about the arrangement. Most of our holders stand 18 to 51 cm (7–20 in) tall and 9 to 31 cm (4–12 in) wide, so there is room to mix a low piece with two taller ones. Groups of different heights look better than a row of identical holders: stagger three down the length of a dining table, or cluster them at one end of a mantel. Keep centrepieces low enough, or slim enough, that people can still see each other across the table.

Finishes set the mood. Black metal reads graphic and modern and suits almost any candle colour; brass and gold warm up a room and catch the flame; glass keeps things light, and wood or marble adds weight and texture. Whatever you choose, never leave a lit candle unattended, keep flames well clear of lampshades, curtains and shelves above, and stand every holder on a heat-safe surface. In a spot you cannot watch, such as a high shelf or a child’s room, use an LED candle instead.
