Area rugs

An area rug pulls a room together, softens footsteps and defines a seating or dining area in an open plan. Polyester is our most common fibre, then polypropylene, wool and cotton, with a few jute and hand-tufted rugs. Sizes vary widely from rug to rug, and some are named by size, such as 8x10, so check each listing’s dimensions against the rules below. Whether you need living room rugs for a busy family room or wool rugs that spring back underfoot, the size matters as much as the pattern.

Buying notes

In a living room, go bigger than you think. The rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and every chair rest on it, which ties the seating together; an 8 × 10 ft (about 240 × 300 cm) rug suits many living rooms. A rug that floats in the middle, touching no furniture, makes the room look smaller. Leave about 25 to 45 cm (10–18 in) of floor showing between the rug and the walls.

In a dining room, measure the table, then add about 60 cm (24 in) on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out and do not catch on the edge. In a bedroom, let the rug extend about 45 to 60 cm (18–24 in) past each side of the bed, so your feet land on it in the morning; it can start just in front of the nightstands rather than running under the whole bed.

Choose the fibre for the room’s traffic. Polyester and polypropylene are easy to clean and hold up in busy rooms, entries and homes with pets; wool is naturally resilient and springs back underfoot; cotton is soft and light; jute brings natural texture but is best kept away from damp areas like entries and bathrooms. A rug pad stops slipping and protects the floor. Check each listing’s care instructions before cleaning.
