Storage cabinets

A storage cabinet puts dishes, linens, games or a collection behind doors, in a room that has no built-ins. Ours are mostly wood, including mango and oak, some on metal frames, with solid doors, drawers or glass-fronted display cabinets. Most are 86 to 112 cm (34–44 in) wide and only 41 to 49 cm (16–19 in) deep, so accent cabinets fit a hallway or a dining room wall without crowding it. Heights run from about 75 cm (30 in), sideboard height, to tall cabinets over 2 m.

Decide first what the cabinet will hold. Glass doors show off dishes, glassware or a collection while keeping the dust off, and suit a dining room or a living room wall. Solid doors hide the everyday clutter of a hallway, an office or a family room. Drawers keep small things, such as cutlery, chargers and napkins, from disappearing to the back. Interiors vary a lot between pieces, so check the shelf count and interior height in each listing if you need room for tall platters, bottles or baskets.

Then check the size against the wall and the way in. The shallow depth of most of our cabinets, under 50 cm, lets them stand in a hallway or behind dining chairs without blocking the path. A low cabinet around 75 to 90 cm tall doubles as a serving surface or a spot for a lamp and a mirror above; a tall display cabinet draws the eye up and suits a room with a high ceiling. Measure doorways, stairs and elevators before ordering, because tall pieces may need extra room to be tilted upright once inside.

Tall cabinets should always be anchored to the wall with a tip-over kit, especially in a home with children, and heavy items belong on the lower shelves. Wood brings warmth and pairs with most dining tables; brown, black and tan are the most common finishes, and metal frames with glass doors read lighter in a small room.
