Accent chairs & armchairs

An accent chair gives a living room a second place to sit and a second thing to look at. Ours are mostly upholstered armchairs on wood or metal frames, covered in fabric, bouclé, leather, vegan leather or jute, and some are swivel chairs. Brown, grey, beige and cream are the most common colours. Half are 74 cm (29 in) wide or less, which fits a reading corner, while larger lounge chairs reach about a metre wide for living room chairs you can sink into.

Buying notes

Start with where the chair will sit and what it sits next to. Keep its seat height within a few centimetres of your sofa’s, so the two feel like one seating group rather than a high perch and a low lounge. Leave about 45 cm (18 in) between the chair and the coffee table, close enough to put down a cup, and keep walkways at least 75 to 90 cm (30–36 in) clear. Most of our chairs are 62 to 106 cm (24–42 in) wide and 65 to 102 cm (26–40 in) deep, so measure the corner before you fall for a deep lounge chair.

Next, choose the arrangement. A pair of matching chairs facing a sofa creates a conversation area that works from every seat. A single chair angled toward a window or a fireplace, with a floor lamp and a side table, becomes a reading corner. A swivel chair suits an open plan room that faces two ways, such as the TV on one side and the kitchen on the other. An ottoman in front turns almost any armchair into a place to put your feet up.

Then pick the cover for how the chair will be used. Bouclé and textured fabrics feel soft and hide wear well; leather and vegan leather wipe clean and suit homes with children or pets; jute and woven covers add texture but prefer lighter use. Exposed wood frames bring warmth, and metal frames keep a chair visually light in a small room. Measure doorways, stairs and elevators before ordering, especially for deep lounge chairs.
