Console tables

A console table gives a narrow wall a job: a landing spot for keys by the door, a surface behind the sofa, or a place for a lamp in a hallway. Wood is our most common material, including mango wood, often on iron or other metal frames, with some marble or glass tops and a few pieces with shelves, drawers or doors. They are narrow, most 31 to 46 cm (12–18 in) deep, and most are 119 to 193 cm (47–76 in) long, so entryway tables and sofa tables alike fit where deeper furniture cannot.

Buying notes

In an entry or hallway, depth is the number that matters. Keep at least 90 cm (36 in) of clear walkway beside the console so people can pass and a door can swing; in a narrow hall, a depth of 30 to 40 cm (12–16 in) usually leaves enough. A console with a lower shelf takes baskets for shoes or a pair of stools, and drawers or doors hide the everyday clutter of mail and chargers. Most of ours stand about 74 to 81 cm (29–32 in) tall.

Behind a sofa, choose a console no longer than the sofa and no taller than its back, so it reads as part of the seating rather than a wall between rooms. In an open plan space, a sofa table behind a floating sofa gives lamps a place and marks the edge of the living area. Leave a few centimetres between the console and the sofa back so cushions do not push against it.

The wall above finishes the look. Hang a mirror or art about two-thirds the width of the console, with the bottom edge 15 to 25 cm (6–10 in) above the top. Balance the surface with a pair of lamps, or one lamp at one end and a tall vase or stack of books at the other, and add a tray for keys so small things do not spread. Long consoles need a clear delivery path: measure doorways and turns before ordering.

Questions

How deep should an entryway console be?

In a narrow hall, 30 to 40 cm (12–16 in) deep usually works. Keep at least 90 cm (36 in) of clear walkway beside it. Most of our consoles are 31 to 46 cm (12–18 in) deep.

What size console table goes behind a sofa?

Choose one no longer than the sofa and no taller than the sofa’s back, so it reads as part of the seating. Leave a small gap so the back cushions do not press against it.

What should go above a console table?

A mirror or art about two-thirds the console’s width, hung 15 to 25 cm (6–10 in) above the top, with a lamp or a pair of lamps and a tray for keys on the surface.
