Start with the finish. Framed prints are the largest group, and many are finished under glass, which protects the print but reflects light, so think about the windows and lamps facing the wall. Canvas art prints are lighter and have no glare, which makes them easier on bright walls and simpler to hang. Most pieces are 4 to 6 cm (about 2 in) deep, so they sit close to the wall whichever finish you choose. Green, blue, white, grey and gold are the colours that come up most often.

Over a sofa, bed or console, choose one piece, or a grouped arrangement, about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it; a 210 cm sofa takes art around 140 cm wide. A single piece that is too small looks lost, so if the right width is hard to find, hang two or three pieces side by side and treat them as one. For a gallery wall, keep 5–8 cm (2–3 in) between frames and plan the outer edges of the whole group rather than each frame.

Hang art so its centre sits about 145–152 cm (57–60 in) from the floor, the eye level of most people standing. Above furniture, leave 15–25 cm (6–10 in) between the top of the sofa, bed or console and the bottom of the frame. Heavy framed pieces need a stud or rated wall anchors, and two hanging points keep them level over time. Lay a gallery wall out on the floor first, or tape paper shapes to the wall, before you put a single hole in it.
