About half of the selection is ceramic, followed by metal and glass vases, with some terracotta and a few brass and gold finishes. Start with what the vase will hold. For fresh flowers, choose glazed ceramic or glass, and read the product description before you buy: some decorative vases are made for dried stems or display only. Glass lets you see the water level at a glance. Unglazed terracotta is porous, so keep it for dried stems, branches or a vase left empty as a sculpture. Metal vases in brass or gold finishes suit dried arrangements and add warmth next to wood.

Then check the size against the spot. Most pieces are 13 to 33 cm (5–13 in) wide, with a median of 20 cm, so measure a narrow console or shelf before you choose: a wide vase crowds a slim surface, and a short one disappears on a large table. On a dining table, keep the arrangement low enough that people can see each other across it. Floor vases belong beside a console, in an entry or next to a fireplace, where they have room to stand on their own.

To style a group, use odd numbers and vary the heights, tall pieces behind and short ones in front, so nothing is hidden. For stems, a length about one and a half times the vase height looks balanced: a 30 cm vase pairs well with stems of around 45 cm. Mixing one ceramic, one glass and one metal piece keeps a grouping interesting, while three vases in one colour look calm and deliberate.
