Throw pillows

Throw pillows are the quickest way to change the look of a sofa, a chair or a bed without buying new furniture. Linen is our most common fabric, with velvet and cotton as well, in square sizes such as 18, 20 and 22 in and in lumbar pillows of about 14 × 26 in. Cream, black, white and beige are the most common colours, which makes them easy to layer. Many listings name the filler, non-allergen or down, so you can tell a finished pillow from a cushion cover at a glance.

Buying notes

Check what is included before you order. When the listing name says w/ Filler, the pillow arrives with an insert, and the name often says which kind: a non-allergen fill for allergy-prone homes, or down for a softer, heavier pillow you can plump and chop. A listing that says Pillow Cover with no filler mentioned may be the cover alone, which is handy if you already own inserts and just want a new look for the season. Linen reads relaxed and matte, velvet adds depth and a soft sheen, and cotton is the easy everyday choice.

Size the pillows to the seat. Squares of 20 to 22 in (51–56 cm) suit most sofas, and 18 in (46 cm) squares suit armchairs, accent chairs and smaller sofas. A lumbar pillow, about 14 × 26 in (36 × 66 cm), supports your lower back in a dining or reading chair, sits well on a bench and finishes the front of a made bed. If you buy covers only, choose inserts about 5 cm (2 in) larger than the cover, so the pillow looks full rather than flat.

Styling is simpler than it looks. An odd number of pillows reads relaxed, while matching pairs at each end of a sofa read tailored and formal. A reliable mix is one pattern, one texture and one solid, repeated in the same colour family: for example a striped cotton, a nubby linen and a plain velvet in cream and black. On a sectional, place the largest pillows in the corner and step down in size toward the ends, and keep at least one seat clear so the sofa is still easy to sit on.
