Bar stools & counter stools

Bar stools turn a kitchen island or a home bar into the spot where everyone ends up, for breakfast, homework or a drink. We carry both counter stools and bar-height stools, many of them backless and others with a low back, on metal or wood frames with leather, faux leather or fabric seats. Brown, black and grey are the most common colours. The one measurement that matters is your counter height, so check it before you choose between counter height stools and taller bar stools.

Seat height decides everything. Counter stools have a seat about 61 to 69 cm (24–27 in) from the floor and suit kitchen counters and islands about 91 cm (36 in) high. Bar stools have a seat about 71 to 81 cm (28–32 in) high and suit bar tops about 102 to 107 cm (40–42 in). Either way, leave 23 to 30 cm (9–12 in) between the seat and the underside of the counter. Measure your counter first, then compare it with each stool’s seat height rather than its overall height.

Next, work out how many fit. Allow about 60 cm (24 in) per stool along the counter, measured from the centre of one seat to the centre of the next, so people are not bumping elbows; a 180 cm island takes three stools comfortably. Most of our stools are 41 to 54 cm (16–21 in) wide, and overall heights run from about 66 to 105 cm (26–41 in), so check the overall height too if the stools will sit under a low window or open shelving.

Then choose a style for how you sit. Backless stools tuck fully under the counter overhang and keep sightlines open across a kitchen, which suits a smaller room or quick meals. A low back gives support for longer dinners and homework sessions. Leather and faux leather wipe clean with a damp cloth, the practical choice at a breakfast counter; fabric seats add warmth and colour but need a little more care. Metal frames read light and modern, while wood warms up a kitchen full of hard surfaces.
