Floor lamps

Floor lamps bring light to the places a ceiling fixture cannot reach: beside a reading chair, behind a sofa or into a dark corner. Linen shades are our most common, and drum shades are another common style, on bases of brass, iron and other metals, some weighted with marble, and a few multi-light designs with glass globes. Heights run up to about 190 cm (75 in), so there are modern floor lamps and reading floor lamps for most rooms.

Buying notes

For reading, placement matters more than wattage. Set the standing lamp slightly behind and to one side of the chair, so the light falls over your shoulder onto the page rather than into your eyes. The bottom of the shade should sit at about seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110 cm (40–43 in) from the floor; any higher and you see the bulb, any lower and the light no longer reaches the page.

For a room without a ceiling fixture, taller lamps do the heavy lifting. A lamp around 170 to 190 cm with an open or upturned shade washes the wall and ceiling with light and makes a small room feel bigger; a pair of lamps at either end of a sofa balances the room. Linen shades soften and spread the light, drum shades give a clean outline, and glass globes on a multi-light lamp throw light in several directions at once.

Most are 20 to 61 cm (8–24 in) wide overall, so check the footprint against the space beside a chair or behind a sofa, and keep the cord out of walkways. A marble or weighted metal base keeps a tall lamp steady where children or pets pass. Check each listing for the bulb type, maximum wattage and switch, whether a foot switch, a pull chain or an inline switch on the cord, so you can reach it from where you sit.

Questions

Where should a floor lamp go beside a reading chair?

Slightly behind and to one side of the chair, so light falls over your shoulder. The bottom of the shade should sit at about seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110 cm (40–43 in) from the floor.

How tall should a floor lamp be?

For reading, choose a height that puts the bottom of the shade near seated eye level, about 100 to 110 cm (40–43 in) from the floor. Taller lamps, up to about 190 cm (75 in), with an open or upturned shade light a whole corner or the ceiling.

Which shade gives the best light?

Linen shades soften and spread light for living rooms; drum shades give a clean, modern outline; glass globes on multi-light lamps send light in several directions. Check each listing for bulb type and maximum wattage.
