Decorative objects are the finishing layer of a room: the pieces that make a bookcase, a console or a coffee table look lived in rather than empty. Nearly half of ours are metal, often in black, white or gold, followed by wood and resin, with marble, ceramic and glass pieces too. Most are small, with half standing 20 cm (8 in) tall or less, which makes them easy shelf decor. Some come as matched sets, and some are sculptural home decor accents that hold a surface on their own.

Mix materials rather than matching them. A metal piece brings shine and a crisp outline, wood adds warmth and grain, resin allows sculptural shapes at a lighter weight, and marble or glass gives a surface some polish. Black is the most common finish, with white and gold next, so they are easy to repeat across a room, for example a gold object on the bookcase that echoes a brass lamp base. Sets take the guesswork out of a grouping, while a single sculptural piece works best with space around it.

Check the size against the spot before you order. Most objects are 12 to 43 cm (5–17 in) tall and 10 to 41 cm (4–16 in) wide, with depths of 7 to 28 cm (3–11 in), so compare the listed depth with your shelf: a deep piece on a shallow shelf overhangs and looks crowded. On a coffee table, keep objects low enough to see over from the sofa. A console against a wall has room for a taller piece that would block the view anywhere else.

The simplest styling rule is to group in threes and vary height and material: a tall metal piece, a low wooden one and something glossy. Leave some empty shelf space, because objects read better with room around them than packed edge to edge. On a coffee table or ottoman, a tray corrals small pieces so the surface stays usable and is easy to clear. Keep heavier marble and glass pieces back from the edge, and step back to look at the shelf from where you usually sit before calling it done.
