Chandeliers

A chandelier is the light fixture a room is built around, whether it hangs over the dining table or in the middle of a living room. Metal and iron frames are our most common, finished in brass, gold or black, alongside glass, wood, rattan and beaded designs for a softer or more natural look. Most are 18 to 122 cm (7–48 in) wide, with a median of 66 cm (26 in), so there are modern chandeliers for a small dining nook and generous dining room chandeliers for a long table.

Buying notes

Size it from the table first. Over a dining table, choose a chandelier about half to two-thirds as wide as the table, so a 100 cm wide table suits a fixture around 50 to 66 cm across. Hang it with its bottom about 76 to 91 cm (30–36 in) above the table top: close enough to feel intimate at dinner, high enough that nobody looks straight into the bulbs. On a long rectangular table, a linear fixture or two smaller chandeliers keep the light even from end to end.

For a fixture in the middle of a room, a classic rule of thumb helps: add the room’s length and width in feet, and use that sum as a diameter in inches. A 12 × 14 ft room adds up to 26, which suits a chandelier about 26 in (66 cm) wide. Wherever people walk underneath, keep about 2.1 m (7 ft) between the floor and the bottom of the fixture; in a double-height entry you can use a longer drop and a larger fixture, still keeping that clearance.

Chandeliers are hardwired and can be heavy, so have a licensed electrician confirm the ceiling box is rated for the fixture’s weight before installation. Check each listing for the bulb type, the number of bulbs and the maximum wattage, and for whether it works with a dimmer; a dimmer lets the same fixture light homework at six and dinner at eight. Open iron frames and exposed bulbs read modern, while glass, beads and rattan soften the light and the look.

Questions

What size chandelier for a dining table?

About half to two-thirds the width of the table: a 100 cm (39 in) wide table suits a chandelier roughly 50 to 66 cm (20–26 in) across. Hang it with its bottom 76 to 91 cm (30–36 in) above the table.

How do I size a chandelier for a room?

Add the room’s length and width in feet and use the total as a diameter in inches. A 12 × 14 ft room suits a fixture about 26 in (66 cm) wide. Keep about 2.1 m (7 ft) of clearance wherever people walk under it.

Can any ceiling hold a chandelier?

Not always. Chandeliers are hardwired and some are heavy, so have a licensed electrician confirm the ceiling box is rated for the fixture’s weight. Check each listing for bulbs, wattage and dimmer compatibility.

How much is delivery, and can I return a chandelier?

Delivery is priced live at checkout for your address, so you see the cost before paying. Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery; you pay return shipping, and a 20% restocking fee applies.
