Benches

A bench is seating that stays out of the way: at the dining table, in the entry or at the foot of the bed. Wood is our most common material, many on iron or metal frames, with upholstered, leather and hand-woven seats for more comfort and texture. Most are 56 to 168 cm (22–66 in) long, with a median of 142 cm (56 in), and seats mostly 43 to 52 cm (17–20 in) high, so there are entryway benches, dining benches and upholstered benches for most rooms.

At the dining table, match the seat to your chairs. A bench seat around 45 to 48 cm (18–19 in) high lines up with most dining chairs, so everyone sits at the same level. Choose a bench 15 to 30 cm (6–12 in) shorter than the table, so it tucks between the table legs when not in use; a 180 cm table suits a bench of about 150 to 165 cm. A bench seats children and extra guests more flexibly than chairs, and slides under the table to open up the room.

In an entry, a bench gives somewhere to sit and pull on boots, and a spot to drop a bag. Leave about 90 cm (36 in) of walkway in front so the door and the traffic still flow, and add baskets underneath for shoes if the bench has an open base. A wood or leather seat copes best with wet boots and daily use; a cushion or upholstered top makes it more comfortable to linger.
