Coffee tables

The coffee table sits at the centre of the living room and takes more daily use than almost anything else in it. Ours are mostly wood, alongside marble, stone and travertine tops on wood or metal bases. You will find round coffee tables, square and oval tops, a few nesting sets and some with storage underneath. Half are 114 cm (45 in) long or less, most stand around 41 cm (16 in) high, and the sizing rule below helps you match one to your sofa, from modern coffee tables to solid wood ones.

Buying notes

Size the table from the sofa. A coffee table about two-thirds the length of the sofa looks balanced and keeps both ends within reach, so a 220 cm sofa takes a table around 145 cm long, and a 180 cm apartment sofa one around 120 cm. The top should sit level with the sofa seat or up to 5 cm (2 in) below it. Leave 40 to 45 cm (16–18 in) between the table and the sofa, close enough to reach a cup and far enough for your knees. Most of ours are 89 to 140 cm (35–55 in) long and 38 to 46 cm (15–18 in) high.

Shape changes how a room moves. A round top has no corners to catch a shin, keeps a walkway open and softens the corner of a sectional; an oval top gives you the reach of a rectangle with softer ends; a square table suits a deep sectional or a pair of sofas facing each other. Storage tops and shelves hide remotes, coasters and throws, and a nesting set gives you a second surface you can pull out for guests.

Material decides how the table lives day to day. Wood brings warmth and hides small marks; marble, stone and travertine tops are cool, heavy and hard-wearing, but marble and travertine can etch, so wipe up wine and citrus promptly and use coasters. How do I care for a marble or travertine coffee table?

Use coasters, and wipe up wine, coffee and citrus promptly, because both stones can etch. Clean with a soft damp cloth and a mild soap, never an abrasive or acidic cleaner.
