Dining tables

The dining table is where a home eats, works and gathers, so its size matters as much as its style. Wood is the main material on most of our dining tables, with some marble tops and metal bases; about half are round dining tables, and many stand on a single pedestal base. Most are 107 to 239 cm (42–94 in) long or across, with a median of 152 cm (60 in), at the standard height of about 76 cm (30 in), so there are compact kitchen tables and long wood dining tables alike.

Buying notes

Start with how many people you seat. Along a straight side, allow about 60 cm (24 in) per person; round tables seat fewer than their edge suggests. A 107 to 122 cm (42–48 in) round table seats four comfortably; a 152 cm (60 in) round seats about six; a 180 cm (71 in) rectangle seats six, three along each side, with room for a seventh and eighth at the ends. If you often host more, a longer rectangle adds places more easily than a larger round, which gets hard to reach across.

Then check the room. Leave about 90 cm (36 in) between the table edge and walls or other furniture so chairs can pull out, and about 107 cm (42 in) where people need to walk behind seated guests. A round table suits a square room or a breakfast nook and keeps conversation easy; a rectangle suits a long room and a long sideboard. A rug under the table should extend about 60 cm (24 in) beyond the edge on every side so chairs stay on it.

Finally, think about base and top. A pedestal base leaves more legroom and lets you fit an extra chair around a round table, because there are no legs in the way. Wood tops are warm and forgiving of daily use; marble tops are cool and striking but can etch, so use placemats and wipe up wine and citrus. Large and stone-topped tables are heavy: measure doorways, stairs and elevators before ordering. Delivery is priced live at checkout for your address.

Questions

What size dining table seats six?

A 152 cm (60 in) round table or a 180 cm (71 in) rectangle seats six. Along a straight side, allow about 60 cm (24 in) per person; round tables seat fewer than their edge length suggests.

How much space do I need around a dining table?

Leave about 90 cm (36 in) between the table edge and walls or furniture so chairs can pull out, and about 107 cm (42 in) where people walk behind seated guests.

Round or rectangular dining table?

Round tables suit square rooms and nooks and keep conversation easy, especially on a pedestal base. Rectangles suit long rooms and seat larger groups, since adding length adds places without making the table hard to reach across.

How much is delivery, and can I return a dining table?

Delivery is priced live at checkout for your address, so you see the cost before paying. Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery; you pay return shipping, and a 20% restocking fee applies. Measure doorways, stairs and elevators before ordering a large table.
