Wall decor

Wall decor adds shape, shadow and texture where framed art would feel too flat: a narrow wall, a stairwell or the space above a bed. Metal wall decor is our most common kind, with wood, glass and resin pieces as well, and a good number come as sets of two or more, which makes a grouping easy. You will find wall sculptures, signs and wall candle holders; black is the most common colour, then tan and brown. Most pieces are 16 to 122 cm (6–48 in) wide, and many sit only about 6 cm off the wall.

Buying notes

Choose the piece for the wall it will live on. A tall, slim sculpture suits the wall beside a staircase or between two windows; a wide, shallow piece works above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard; and a set lets you fill an awkward space in steps. Metal pieces cast shadows that change through the day, especially under a wall sconce or picture light. Wood warms up a cool, modern room, while glass and resin bring colour and a little shine. Black goes with nearly any wall colour, and tan and brown sit well beside wood furniture.

Plan a grouping as one shape. Treat the whole arrangement as a single piece about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it, and keep 5 to 8 cm (2–3 in) between the pieces so they read together rather than scattered. Lay everything out on the floor first, or tape paper cut-outs to the wall, and photograph the options before you commit to holes. Most of our pieces are 11 to 115 cm (4–45 in) tall, so check the listed height as well as the width when a set has to fit between a ceiling and a headboard.

Hang it securely. Many pieces are shallow, about 6 cm (2 in) deep, so they suit hallways and walkways where anything deeper would catch a shoulder; a few sculptural pieces project much further, so check the depth in the listing. Heavier metal pieces need a stud or rated wall anchors, and two hanging points keep a wide piece level. In a stairwell, measure from the stair nose rather than the floor, and keep the centre of each piece at a consistent height as the stairs rise.
