Side tables

Side tables give a drink, a book or a lamp somewhere to land right beside your seat. Ours cover end tables for the sofa, accent tables for a reading chair and round side tables that soften a tight corner, in wood (including mango), metal and iron, some with a marble top. Half are 56 cm (22 in) tall or lower, and most tops are 34 to 61 cm (13–24 in) wide. Nesting sets and sets of two add surface when guests arrive and tuck away afterwards.

The height of the table matters more than its style. Keep the top within about 5 cm (2 in) of the arm of the sofa or chair beside it, so a cup or a remote is within easy reach without stretching up or down. Most of our side tables stand between 46 and 66 cm (18–26 in), which covers the usual range of sofa and armchair arms; measure your own arm height before you choose, because low, deep sofas often sit well under 60 cm.

Next, think about what the table will carry. A lamp needs a top wide enough for its base plus a little room for a book or a phone, which usually means 45 cm (18 in) or more; our tops run mostly from 34 to 61 cm (13–24 in), with a median of 48 cm. A pedestal base slides closer to a chair than a table with legs at the corners, and a round top is kinder in a busy walkway. Nesting tables give you extra surface in the footprint of one.

Materials change how the table lives. Wood and mango wood bring warmth and hide small marks; metal and iron frames keep the look light and let the floor show through. Marble and stone tops are heavy and stable, which makes them a good base for a lamp, but marble can etch, so wipe up wine, coffee and citrus promptly and use a coaster. Black, brown, gold and tan are the most common finishes, which makes it easy to match other furniture in the room.
